AD&D Resources

Greyhawk Resources

Original Dungeons & Dragons Resources

I have recently become enamored of the original, 1974-76 editions of D&D...the ones that came first in a woodgrain, then in a white, box and consisted of three little brown books with five subsequent supplements: Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Eldritch Wizardry, Gods, Demi-Gods, and Heroes, and Swords & Spells. The game was meant to be used with Chainmail, and is, in my opinion, enhanced by ownership of those original miniatures rules. This section will provide resources for this excellent game.

OD&D Clone Rules

  • Original Edition Characters for Labyrinth Lord. Turns LL into OD&D, and is probably more faithful than the more popular Swords & Wizardry.
  • Swords & Wizardry, the first effort at Retro-Clone OD&D rules. They are not a precise re-creation of OD&D, but are focused on the feel of original edition play.
    Swords & Wizardry SRD
Frog God Games, the distributor of Swords & Wizardry: White Box,.
  • Noble Knight Games, purveyors of fine out-of-print classic gaming products.
  • Consolidated Rules. A gent by the name of Bruce Mohler has done what is probably the nearest "true" retro-clone of the D&D rules. It's not 100% above board as he actually calls it "Dungeons & Dragons," and doesn't use the OGL, but it is a re-presentation and faithful, too. There are some omissions; monsters don't have hit dice listed, for example, making it difficult to run a game with only these rules, but they do make for an excellent resource. This is archived from the Wayback Macine at the Internet Archive.

Websites and Blogs

  • The OD&D message forums, the best community around for discussion of the original rules.
  • The Wasted Lands, my OD&D-centric blog with a "sandbox in development."
  • Philotomy's OD&D Musings one of the best sites around for the theory and philosophy of OD&D, as well as a wealth of practical advice on how to use the original rules.
  • Grognardia, one of the most respected OD&D and general old school gaming blogs out there.
  • Mythmere Games, a startup group who have done an admirable job with their attempt at a clone set of OD&D-style rules, Swords & Wizardry..

Companion Booklets and Other OD&D Resources

Please note that my PDF booklets are designed to be printed using the booklet printing feature in Acrobat/Acrobat Reader, with the cover printed separately. To do this, simply select "Booklet Printing" in your main print screen under "Page Scaling." Then, under "Pages," enter 2-x, where x is the last page of the booklet. This will print the entire booklet interior, leaving the cover unprinted (and will save you 3 blank pages at the end of the booklet). When you've done this, print just the cover. This time, under Page Scaling select "Multiple Pages per Sheet," and make sure you have checked "Horizontal Reversed." Then set it to print only page 1. This will spit out the cover for you.

Other OD&D Resources

  • The Compleat Chainmail Combat System, an expanded look at using Chainmail with OD&D, compiled by Aldarron back in 2010-2011. Combines my system with several others, and forms a complete combat system for OD&D. I use this at my table.
Forbidden Lore, the original supplement I did expounding on just how Chainmail fits seamlessly with OD&D. This is incorporated into Compleat Chainmail, above.
  • An OD&D Character Sheet designed by vladtolenkov at the OD&D Discussion Boards!
  • Vladtolenkov's OD&D Sheet in Word (.doc) formula!
  • Player Chronicle and Character Journal, in PDF format, designed for booklet printing. This 48-page booklet allows for tracking character advancement and complete notes for NPCs, other party members, XP, treasure, and 7 full adventures.
  • Player Chronicle and Character Journal with a more minimalist approach to spells. As a result, this one can handle up to 8 full adventures.
  • Player Chronicle and Character Journal with no spell pages. Ideal for Fighting-Men and Thieves, this can handle up to 8 adventures.
  • Philotomy's OD&D Musings, in PDF format, designed for printing using the "booklet printing" function of Acrobat Reader--it will match your existing booklets!
